Creative Writers Collaborate with American School of the Deaf
Creative Writers from the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts High School are once again collaborating with the American School of the Deaf. The workshops, which last from November until May, are an opportunity for students from both institutions to share and create poetry together. Students take part in icebreaking exercises and are then given a series of prompts with which they make individual and collaborative poetry, which is further developed throughout the course of the year. In return, students from the Academy learn basic sign language skills along with learning about deaf culture, communication, and their art form. In addition, students learn more about themselves, their own humanity, and have the opportunity to make friends with students whom they would never otherwise meet. This wonderful collaboration is in its third year.
