Learning Beyond the Classroom: Exploring Connecticut, Engaging the World

At CREC magnet schools, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it steps onto buses, walks through museums, sails along rivers, sits in theaters, and stands inside the very places where history, science, culture, and civic life come alive.

From Kindergarten through Grade 12, CREC students experience a carefully designed sequence of field trips that grow alongside them, turning Connecticut into an extended classroom and helping students see themselves as learners, leaders, and engaged citizens in the world around them.

This is more than a series of trips. It’s a journey.

The Early Years: Curiosity Takes Root

For our youngest learners, field trips are often their first structured experiences outside of school. Pre-K and Kindergarten students explore farms, museums, and nature centers—meeting animals, discovering how communities work, and learning where food, stories, and traditions come from. These early experiences spark curiosity and help children connect classroom lessons to the real world in ways that are joyful, sensory, and unforgettable.

A Kindergartener who feeds a farm animal or walks through a historic Connecticut home isn’t just learning facts—they’re learning how to ask questions, observe closely, and feel confident exploring new places.

Elementary School: Discovering Connecticut

As students move through Grades 1–5, their field trip experiences deepen and expand across the state. They ride historic steam trains, investigate dinosaur tracks, walk through colonial villages, tour science centers, and visit landmarks tied to Connecticut’s role in American history.

Students come face-to-face with figures like Noah Webster and Mark Twain. They explore rivers that powered early industries and museums that tell stories of innovation, resilience, and community. Through theater programs, they experience storytelling, music, and performance that reflect diverse cultures and voices.

By the end of elementary school, students don’t just know about Connecticut—they’ve experienced it.

Middle School: Expanding Perspectives

In Grades 6–8, learning becomes more complex—and so do the journeys. Students explore marine ecosystems at Mystic Aquarium and Seaport, examine Indigenous histories and perspectives at museums across the state, and engage with science, geography, and the arts in hands-on, immersive ways.

They may sail, investigate environmental challenges, or step onto historic stages and performance spaces. These experiences help students connect academic content to real-world issues, encouraging critical thinking, empathy, and collaboration.

Middle school field trips are about perspective—seeing how science, history, culture, and place intersect, and understanding how students fit into a broader community.

High School: Preparing for the World Ahead

By high school, field trips become transformative milestones—stepping stones to the future. Students build teamwork and leadership through challenge courses and outdoor learning. They engage directly with civic life at the Connecticut State Capitol, and they confront powerful stories of freedom, resistance, and identity at museums dedicated to Indigenous and African American history.

High school students also begin to reach beyond Connecticut. Through magnet schools such as the Academy of International Studies, students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum can participate in international travel, field studies, and service projects that take them around the world, expanding their understanding of global cultures and issues. These experiences help students see first-hand the connections between their studies and real-world communities, from service in Central America to exploratory trips across continents that deepen both empathy and global awareness.

For students passionate about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, experiences tied to robotics, competitions, and collaborative problem-solving take them beyond the classroom and sometimes beyond regional competitions—preparing them for college, careers, and lifelong learning. Students may travel for robotics challenges, IB field studies, or other competitive events, gaining confidence, resilience, and a network of peers and mentors.

Students attend financial literacy fairs inside major stadiums, explore college campuses, experience Broadway and professional theater, and participate in college- and career-focused learning tied to their academic pathways.

For seniors, these journeys culminate in experiences that celebrate both growth and possibility—college visits, career exploration, and meaningful end-of-year trips that mark how far they’ve come.

Why Field Trips Matter

Field trips at CREC magnet schools are not extras. They are guaranteed experiences—intentionally aligned to curriculum, equity, and access. They ensure that every student, regardless of background, has the opportunity to learn by doing, seeing, questioning, and experiencing.

From a first bus ride in Kindergarten to a college campus visit in Grade 12, CREC students don’t just grow academically. They grow through experiences that shape how they see Connecticut—and their place within it.
