Students will learn about the characteristics and responsibilities of being a good citizen with the goal of understanding how they can make a difference in their community.

Unit 2: Reading Information Books
Readers will explore a topic through nonfiction books. They will use the features of the text to understand new information, connect learning between texts, and share with a partner their new learning.

Unit 2: Informational Writing
Writing volume is an important goal in this unit, and this means children will write many information books and will learn about different text structures.

Students work with place value; representing numbers with hundreds/tens/ ones, comparing numbers, and adding numbers (including renaming)

Unit 2: Connecting with the World Around Me (Geography)
Students will explore their world through different maps and learn how living in different places affects decisions made by people.

Unit 3: Getting to Know Characters
Readers work with early chapter books to think carefully about characters and their stories. Students will also focus on the lessons the characters learn and try to connect them to their own lives.

Unit 3: Writing Fictional Stories
Students will draw on their knowledge as readers to write in ways that recreate the sounds and rhythms of stories

Unit 2: Matter and Its Interactions
Using the classic story The Three Little Pigs, students will design a shelter for a fourth little pig. In order to do this, they will learn about forms of matter, properties of matter, and how matter is affected by temperature.

Students learn to measure and estimate length, represent lengths on line plots and reason about shapes.

Unit 4: Shoring Up Foundational Skills
Readers will focus on reading harder, vocabulary-rich books with accuracy, fluency, and meaning.

This unit, with its focus on clarity and precise language, will help students reread and listen to the sounds of the words they have written.

Students work with money to master addition and subtraction within 100.

|
Unit 5: Series Reading
Readers will re-read familiar series in order to understand what makes the books in a series go together. Then they will join a book club where they will read a new series with classmates and talk about the patterns, both simple and complex, across a series.

Unit 5: Writing about Reading
Students will learn to write about beloved books in ways that
persuade others to love them as much as they do. Second-graders will learn to write opinions about the books they read.

Unit 3: Making a Difference Then and Now (History)
Students become historians to compare life in the past to life today by using historical sources and understanding different perspectives to gain knowledge how history influences our choices today

Unit 5: Time, Graphs, and Word Problems
Students tell time to the nearest 5-minute interval, display data in bar graphs and picture graphs, and interpret graphs to solve problems.

Unit 3: Ecosystem Dynamics
The Koa tree provides a scenario for students to figure out the interdependent relationship between plants, animals and the environment while solving the mystery of the Koa tree presence on Reunion Island. While the Koa tree is a known species of Hawaii, the species also exists on Reunion Island, off the western coast of Africa. The mystery the students must solve throughout the unit is, how did the tree travel 10,000 miles to appear on both islands?

Readers will work in book clubs again with a focus on nonfiction. They will compare and contrast information and ideas within books, across books, and across topics.

Unit 7:Reading and Role Playing: FIction, Folktales, Fairytales
Readers will combine reading with role playing and directing to grow their understanding of characters in both modern day fiction and ancient folktales and fairytales.

Unit 6: 3-Digit Addition and Subtraction
Students continue to work towards fluency with addition and subtraction while focusing on different types of word problems.

Unit 4: Our Needs as a Community (Economics)
Students learn about earning and using money for goods and services in their home, school, and community.

Unit 7:Reading and Role Playing: FIction, Folktales, Fairytales
Readers will combine reading with role playing and directing to grow their understanding of characters in both modern day fiction and ancient folktales and fairytales.

Unit 7: Writing Arguments about Books and Characters
The goal of this unit is to teach students that not only do they have opinions, they also have the tools and the knowledge to develop strong ideas and convince others of these opinions.
