Third Annual CREC Golf Invitational and Scholarship Dinner Raises $85,000 for College Scholarship Program
The CREC Foundation raised $85,000 during the Third Annual CREC Golf Invitational and Scholarship Dinner this week. All the proceeds will benefit the Bruce E. Douglas Scholarship for Overcoming Adversity. Ninety-six golfers competed in the invitational at the Hartford Golf Club in West Hartford on Monday morning. Among the winning foursome low net were Hansen Guest, Haywood White, Danny White and Ishmael Roman.
In the evening, golfers were joined by more than 100 additional sponsors and donors at the scholarship reception and dinner where they learned how their support is making a difference in students’ lives. Adriana Colón, a 2016 Bruce E. Douglas Scholarship recipient, gave a speech during the reception that brought many in the room to tears. She shared a story about unfair treatment by a former employer and described persevering, majoring in environmental science at Yale University and studying ecology and conservation in an Australian rainforest over the summer.
“I’m grateful to all the contributors who maintain and organize the Bruce Douglas Scholarship for Overcoming Adversity. The thought of all the current and future students that will be helped by this network of generous community members is a great source of optimism for me,” she said.
The Bruce E. Douglas Scholarship is awarded in the spring to seniors graduating high school from any CREC member district who enroll in a two-year or four-year educational institution. The scholarship is renewable each year the student is in school. The CREC Foundation, which manages the scholarship, raised funds by offering a wide range of sponsorship packages to the golf invitational. The Sullivan Investment Group of Janney Montgomery Scott LLC and Transamerica were title sponsors.
The CREC Foundation was established in 2005 to support CREC's programs, missions and its members. For more information about the foundation or the Bruce E. Douglas Scholarship, visit: http://www.crec.org/foundation/index.php
